Many Europeans dislike the word soccer, believing it to be an Americanism designed to distance the sport from American Football. This is actually a Holness, as soccer originally comes from a rather debatable contraction of association football, which was evolved into "soccer" by snotty nosed public school types, in the same way that rugby is called "rugger" and buggery is called "Friday night".

Many Americans don't even know what Soccer is. The occasional pudgy finger may hit multiple buttons on the remote at once, leading an unwary American to accidently view a game of soccer on the TV. Confused and disoriented, the average viewer quickly makes their escape to news coverage of Britney Spears' latest publicity stunt.
