Is not only mercilessly barracked by the crowd throughout the game, but has his every decision then picked apart by analysts that evening on Match of the Day.

Despite the fact that the amount of TV cameras at a game means that every incident can be studied to death by two former professionals later that evening, the powers that be refuse to allow the refs access to this footage during a game, fearing that were referees to become 100% correct all the time, fans would realise they were losing because their team was crap and stop turning up.

The referee is assisted by two assistants, formerly known as "linesmen", but now more pretentiously referred to as "Assistant Referees". It is their job to be fat and waddle up and down the sides of the pitch, flagging for offside every now and again without really knowing what that means anymore.
