Penalty
From Frikipedia
A penalty is awarded to a team who suffered an infringement by their opponents in football and rugby. In the case of rugby, any one of the games 26,000 pifling little rules can result in a penalty, for things like "crossing", "gurning" and "having your shoelacs undone".
In American, this translates as a field goal. So named because the kick must be taken from an adjoining field.
In hockey, penalties can be for a myriad of infractions which include hooking, spearing, cross-checking, and Swedish players' favorite, "butt-ending". A penalty in hockey results in the offending player spending 2 minutes in the penalty box (although said Swedish players claim they are not sure what a box looks like). Only about one-fifth of such infractions are actually called, leaving fans baffled when such penalties result in painful losses.
