You know a heatwave is occurring when:

• Frikipedia is wearing shorts.
• Frikipedia's boss is wearing shorts.
• You start planning tube journeys around which lines are likely to be cooler, rather than those that actually go to your destination.
• Metronet (government-sanctioned tinkerers of the tube network and instigators of all planned engineering works) start employing Geoffs to give out free bottles of mineral water at tube stations.
• The Evening Standard temporarily forgets its constitutional role as baiter of Ken Livingstone and runs stories about dogs dying on buses instead.
• It becomes acceptable to sweat like a zoo in public places. Even the zoo.
• You consider going swimming.
