Grid Bids

Probably the finest F1 prediction game since FMBet closed its doors after almost three weeks of embezzlement.

The Rules
Grid Bids offers the chance for budding F1 enthusiasts, and blind idiots, the chance to go head to head in predicting the top 10 of each Grand Prix, by "buying" as many drivers as they can afford for their 30 "points".
Points are allocated to drivers based on their recent results, which are fed into a convoluted system which Friki doesn't understand, usually yielding a high price for Ferraris and Renaults, low prices for the perma-DNF-ing McLarens, and the stock value of crapness (0.5 points) for the Goo.
Points are allocated to the top 10 finishers in each race according to the mystical points system (Mystically defined as being 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for 1st through to 10th respectively). So in theory, the maximum score is set at 66, though unless you somehow manage to secretly fuse two sets of picks together on the sly, the usual score is around 30-odd.
The Winner
At the end of every season, the flukiest Gridbidder is crowned as the Grid Bids Champion, and they joyously celebrate by themselves, whilst every other player grumbles to themselves and resolves that next year will be their year.
Tactics
Range from the sublime to the ridiculous.
- Some gridbidders choose to study the driver pricing in depth, figuring out which drivers are underpriced and picking them with smug abandon. This system usually lasts as long as the first corner, when half your picks crash into each other. Though this can usually be avoided by constantly starting from the assumption that The Hunk is permanantly overpriced.
- Some tend to pick a few bankers (until last year, read: The Chin, now read: The Gin), which erodes the points for their remaining picks massively, but does pretty much guarantee some points will be scored, and leaves you praying for the unlikely sight of Kimi leading home a fleet of Super Aguris and Spyker/Midland/Prodrive/Jordan/A.N.Other cars in the oddest result in F1 history.
- The usually favoured system of budding gridbidders is to blindly mash at the picks page of the site like a demented primate on the verge of discovering how to use hand tools, until the page tells you to stop picking because you've run out of points. This system leaves you in the capable hands of Lady Luck, and tends to mean you have no idea how well you have done until the site updates, because you've got no idea who you actually ended up picking.
Other Points To Consider
New entrants to Grid Bids may need to consider the following.
- It is usually very difficult to submit picks for Grid Bids. You receive a reminder e-mail in your inbox, which contains a handy link directly to the picks page of the site, but on reciept of this, you only have around 7 days to actually submit them. This problem tends to make most players come unstuck, and is the bane of Friki's alcohol-weakened mind, which usually requires constant tantric repetition of even the most menial tasks for the day, lest Friki will forget to do them.
- The Grid Bids site has no GoogleAds, meaning it cannot partake in the ancient symbiotic "Mashing Of The Ads" cycle which Friki has entered into with a litany of other sites. Oftentimes Brid Gidders will forget this fact and click on the 'ad' for a nice Weber BBQ, while infact they've done nothing more than tip Mark Webber. The Bidder will tend to feel fairly good about their mistake post qualifying, but will most likely begin hurling insults at the Google internet ad monopoly come race day.
- Similar instances occur when Bidders go to click on the ad about the teachings of The Divine Cheddar and inadvertently pick another type of cheese; the tasty Rosberg. The Bidder tends to feel very good about this choice until Nico puts his helmet on, both his and the Bidders form dips dramatically after that.
- Before every season, it is traditional for the McLarens to seem underpriced. This theory usually lasts as far as the oddly-smoke enshrouded first corner of the opening Grand Prix.
