Football Italia

Pre-Hollyoaks hangover cure.

Channel 4 started broadcasting the James Richardson-led Football Italia show from around 1993, when English "stars" David Platt and Paul Gascoigne moved to play in Serie A.

During the dearth of live football on TV in the mid 90's, due to Murdochvision, watching Genoa vs Empoli suddenly became very tempting indeed.

The Theme Tune

The theme to Football Italia ended with an unknown Italian commentator shouting "GOLAZZO!", which is Italian for "great goal!". For much of Friki's life, it erroniously believed he was shouting "Goal Lazio!", Lazio being the Italian team that Gascoigne signed for.

Silly Friki.

Friki Update

Friki has just heard that Channel 5 has won the rights to show Italian football from the 2007/08 season, bringing it back from the footballing limbo world that is Setanta. This is the best news Friki has ever heard.

IF they get James Richardson to present it, bring back Joe "MEEEEEEEEEEEEEELAN" Jordan as pundit, and get Peter Brackley to commentate, that is, as it will allow Friki to bask in the halcyon days of the mid-90's, before it realised just how corrupt Italian football really is.

Knowing Channel 5 though, they'll persist with their current dubious presenter pairing of autocue-destroying John Barnes, and gobby Irish DJ Colin Murray, and it will be bubbish.

Come on, C5, sort it out!
