Never underestimate the power of the dark side

The Emperors of Hockey and 2008 Stanley Cup Champions. Universally hated by fans of all NHL franchises, the Red Wings high-stakes game of "buy-the-best-team-and-win-every-year" was seen as unsportsmanlike (or, if you're a Leaf fan, you were just jealous that it actually worked for them).

The dominance of the Wings was thought to be at an end after the salary cap was imposed, rendering them unable to buy big-name free agents. This was not the case, and they continued to tear the whole league a new one, despite the fact that they had to spend the same as everyone else. This has perplexed fans and angered all those incompetent general managers who had that 'payroll excuse' with which to pinpoint the cause of their failure. In a further bitter twist of irony, the collapse of the "Big Three" automakers has resulted in the decreased financial health of the franchise, meaning the team that was supposed to be hurt most by the cap and revenue sharing, has actually been assisted greatly.

If you're a fan of the other 29 teams of the league, I guess it just doesn't pay to take on the Empire. You can't win, Luke.
