Born out of the old European Cup, which was a knockout tournament for the champions of each domestic league in Europe. Now confusingly open to the top two, three or four teams in the big leagues, while the champions from any country smaller than Italy are quietly disposed of in a "qualifying phase".
The current holders are Barcelona, while the year prior to that, Liverpool won it. In the greatest football game ever.
